Team Building

Teamwork is crucial to many environments, from the office to the playing field, adventure sports to the military—any operation that involves more than an individual effort requires teamwork to function effectively. Team building exercises are big business, because struggling companies will find that such exercises greatly improve how their employees function together, increasing the efficiency of the business.

Team building is most often employed in the business world, as more often than not the day to day workplace can be a competitive and individual-based environment, with single efforts being awarded. Team building aims to improve positive communication, leadership skills and cooperation, making the efforts of the team a positive self-reinforcement for every employee.

There are several methods of team building, from simple group exercises to team building retreats lasting several days, including group assessment and bonding and trust exercises. These build confidence in group work as well as group cohesion, and focus on several psychological considerations such as goal setting, visualisation and coherence. They also provide an opportunity for the company and the individuals to assess the strengths and weaknesses of themselves and the other members of the group, allowing individuals to work on their weaknesses while the company can learn how best to utilise the strengths of their employees.

Other benefits of team building that are not specifically work-related are that they can make the work place a better environment for everybody involved, and can in some ways serve as ice-breakers for new staff, allowing everybody to get to know each other.
